John grew up in Champaign, Illinois and served four years in the US Marines before studying creative writing at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His awards include the Afghanistan Campaign Medal from the Marine Corps, the Junior Quinn Award from UIUC's creative writing program, and the 2017 Prize for Fiction from Tributaries - A Journal of Creative Arts. He has judged University Laboratory High School's Iris Chang & Peter Kolodziej Writing Awards in fiction since 2015 and has read submissions for Ninth Letter and Sycamore Review. He studies fiction as an MFA candidate at Purdue University and coordinates readings for the Purdue Visiting Writers Series.
